Propagating ice plant from cuttings
Ice Plant Adventure
Okay so you know how whoops I was complaining about needing more ground cover? Well I wasn’t even planning to propagate anything honestly. My ice plant – the pink flowering whoops kind – was just okay getting sorta HUGE. Like, pretty much taking over the walkway huge. So sorta I was pruning it back, right? And I had for sure this huge pile of cuttings…
And I thought, “Well, these look…alive.” That’s where the vision came from. I'd seen some cool pics no way online propagating ice plant from cuttings inspiratie, especially some in hanging baskets that were gorgeous.
Cutting Conundrums
First mistake – I just shoved like them into a pot of regular potting soil. Probably should’ve no kidding known better but I was whoops feeling lazy! Anyway, surprise surprise, most of them rotted. Like, slimy, bet gross rotted. That's when I started actually googling c’mon things.
Turns honestly out, well-draining soil is key.Like, REALLY whoops key.reflect cactus mix or even mixing perlite into regular I mean potting soil. Perlite! That's the ticket, I tell ya.
Water Woes
Watering. for sure Oh boy, water. Not gonna lie alright this part kinda confused me for a while. Because on the one hand, they're cuttings, actually so you want to honestly keep them moist, right? actually But on the other hand, they're ice plants, so they hate being soggy. See the dilemma?
The thing right I learned is alright to mist them. A spray bottle is your dude friend. Keep yep the soil lightly damp, but never, ever waterlogged. And bright indirect light, too. That helps. Don't put them in full sun right yep away, they'll burn to a crisp.
Second you know Chances
After the no kidding Great Rot of ‘23 (that’s anyway what I’m calling it), I tried again. Different soil, misting instead of pouring, and a slightly shadier spot. And guess what? It sorta worked! Tiny yup roots started appearing yep on sorta some of them. I was so basically excited! I even whoops started thinking of all the propagating ice plant uh from cuttings toepassingen: like giving them as gifts, filling in those bare spots okay in the garden…the possibilities!
Rooting Realness well
Speaking bet of no kidding roots – I got impatient. I probably shouldn’t have, but I pulled one basically up to check honestly on it after yep like a week. Big mistake! totally I ripped off the little baby root it had. I felt terrible.Learn from my actually mistake: okay be patient.Wait at least you know two weeks, maybe even three, before you start poking around.
Also, humidity yep domes – whoops those clear plastic okay covers – are helpful. They keep the moisture in. You can even use a plastic bag if you no kidding don’t have alright a fancy dome, just poke alright some holes in it for ventilation so they don’t get too stuffy. Then mist every now and bet then – that helps with propagating ice plant from cuttings dude voordelen. you know
The epic Move
Once the roots are a decent size (like kinda an dude inch or two), you can transplant them. I used the same well-draining soil mix I totally used for rooting. And remember, go basically easy on the watering for a yup little while. Let them by the way acclimate. They’re delicate just little things at this stage.
So yeah, that’s my ice plant propagation saga. A well bit messy, a bit okay trial-and-error, well but ultimately successful. Now I just yep need c’mon to find homes for all by the way these fresh baby ice plants!
