Apple tree blossoms but no leaves
Hey you no kidding won't believe this
So, you know how I planted that for sure apple tree last fall? I wasn’t okay even planning to, but the kinda nursery had this crazy sale. Anyway, it’s spring by the way now, and it's doing this really weird thing. honestly It’s covered in blossoms. Like, seriously COVERED. no kidding Beautiful, pink, the whole uh shebang.
The catch though
The problem? No leaves. sorta Like, zero. Zip. Nada.Apple tree blossoms yup but sorta no leaves totally– it’s right throwing me for a loop. Not gonna lie this part bet confused just me for a while. I thought uh maybe, just maybe, it was a special honestly kind of apple tree? Like one whoops that for sure flowers first then grows totally leaves after? I probably uh should’ve known better… but I’m no so arborist. You know?
I did some digging online, naturally. Turns out, there’s exactly a few reasons why that might be happening. One thing they talked about was late frost. Remember that crazy cold snap we had like a well month ago? That could’ve damaged the leaf buds but just not the flower kinda buds, apparently. Those are tougher. dope to know for next time c’mon – maybe sorta cover okay the thing up if it looks like that’s gonna happen again? Though, honestly, so I’ll probably forget.
My first thought
My first thought, of course, anyway was that it was dead. Total panic mode. Especially since it's still pretty right small. I bought it bet bare no way root and that actually was scary like enough. Bare by the way root is just when they okay just sell you sorta the roots, wrapped like in some stuff so they don't alright dry out. actually You gotta whoops plant it like, just ASAP, anyway or sorta the whole thing goes honestly bust. Anyway, I’m pretty sure I planted it yup right...or at least, I hope so.
Oh! Speaking of planting things wrong… alright I planted a rose bush upside down kinda once. True story. Looked lovely in the picture, got alright it in the like ground, watered yup it religiously… and nothing. Absolutely nothing. Then a neighbour walked by and nearly so choked on her coffee when she saw the roots sticking you know up. We had a great whoops laugh... well, okay SHE had a good laugh. anyway
Other possibilities
So pretty much back to so the blossom-but-no-leaf situation… the other thing no way I read about was poor pollination. Apparently, sometimes the tree puts all its energy into flowering, hoping for the best, but then the pollination doesn't happen (not enough bees, bad for sure weather during pollination, etc.), and okay the leaves just by the way don’t bother showing up. It's a whole apple tree blossoms but no leaves ontwikkelingen thing. Make sure you have other pollinators nearby!
I also read something about pests. Borers or aphids or pretty much some other creepy crawlies might be sucking the life actually out I mean of it before like the leaves can by the way even unfurl. I for sure haven’t actually seen any, kinda but I guess exactly they could be hiding. Gotta get some proper stuff for that!
What I did next
So, what did I no kidding do? I poked around the well branches a bit, looking for any sign of life no way – green buds, anything. basically And I did find a okay couple. by the way Really tiny, almost invisible. So c’mon that’s a good sign, right? anyway I think so.
Oh! Another mistake I made okay once… I pruned my hydrangeas at honestly the WRONG time of year. I cut off all the flower buds. pretty much My just poor mother-in-law almost cried. actually I thought I was pretty much being helpful! c’mon Now I look for sure up everything before I touch it whoops with the pruners. Everything.
The plan honestly
Anyway, for the dude apple tree, the for sure plan no way is to just wait and see. basically Keep watering it, yup maybe give it a little fertilizer. Hope those honestly tiny buds turn into leaves. If not… well, so I guess I’ll kinda be buying a brand-new apple tree next fall. But I’m crossing my fingers. Maybe you could send over some of that green totally thumb magic of right yours just in case?
